Yogi Ferrell makes it official: It's Indiana
Before the Park Tudor basketball season opener this evening, Yogi Ferrell made the official announcement that he will play his college ball in Bloomington. The 5-star point guard is the ninth in the last four months for Coach Tom Crean. Eight of those nine prospects, plus Austin Etherington, are from within the Indiana borders. Crean has effectively shut down any notion that he can't recruit the state and has placed IU back at the top of the state's pecking order.
No longer are all the best players in the state staying away from Bloomington. Granted, the stacked class of 2012 has plenty of talent to go around, but the top 2 Indiana prospects (Ferrell and Hanner Perea) are going to be Hoosiers. It is safe to say that Indiana basketball is making all the right moves in it's rise back to national prominence. I'm not sure if any other team in the country has been able to dominate an area like Crean has, especially as talent-rich as Indiana is for the next few years.
The best part about this all may be that Crean is not done yet. With Ferrell on board, the new top target becomes Hamilton Southeastern's Gary Harris, ranked #24 in the class of 2012. Harris' top two schools have long been considered to be IU and Michigan State, but he has received interest and offers from a number of major programs. Recently, he has attended games at Purdue, Illinois and Louisville. One thing is for sure: he has taken notice of what is going on with Tom Crean down in Bloomington. Crean has been the lead recruiter for Harris. My guess is that the next big announcement on the IU recruiting front will be concerning Mr. Harris, but it seems like he is no particularly hurry to end his recruitment at this point.
