IU staff on the recruiting trail

The IU coaching staff is out in full force this evening checking out recruits all over the state. Earlier today, assistant coach Steve McClain was down in Vincennes to check out uncommitted 2011 big man Walter Pitchford. Pitchford, who is currently in a prep year at Summit Christian Academy in Michigan, originally signed with Depaul before being let out of his commitment due to the Blue Demons' coaching change. According to Rivals, Pitchford holds an offer from Iowa and is getting interest from IU, Minnesota, Memphis and other major schools. Reports from the game say Walter went for either 12 or 14 points on 5-12 shooting, though he had limited playing time in the second half.
5-star Hoosier commitment Yogi Ferrell is playing tonight as his Park Tudor team takes on Heritage Christian. He is facing top 2013 prospect Basil Smotherman in this one, and head coach Tom Crean is reportedly at the game checking the two of them out. Scout's Brian Snow is reporting that at halftime, Park Tudor leads 44-23 behind Ferrell's 16 points. Smotherman has just 4, so far.
Lastly, 2014 commitment Trey Lyles and his Tech teammates are facing off against PJ Thompson and Brebeuf. IU assistant Tim Buckley is on site for this one. Lyles has been having a fantastic freshman campaign so far and is poised to be the top prospect in the state (even top 5-10 in the country). Thompson is also a freshman and is early on in the recruiting process. He is hearing from a number of schools so far, including IU, Purdue and Xavier.
