Recent Recruiting Ignites Indiana/Purdue Rivalry

Tom Crean's impressive recruiting run has been well-documented on this site, as the Hoosiers have received huge commitments from 2012, 2013 and 2014. More impressive is the fact that most of the players Crean has recruited are from within the state. The days of all the top Indiana prospects bolting to other schools seems to be over, and that is all more evident now with a recent string of in-state recruits pledging for the Purdue Boilermakers. While Matt Painter has taken commitments from several out-of-state prospects, the buzz about a re-energized rivalry has grown with the recent commitment of 2013 stud Basil Smotherman (Indianapolis Heritage Christian). The 6-5 small forward Smotherman joins Fort Wayne Northrop guard Bryson Scott in an impressive recruiting class for the Boilers. Down south, the Hoosiers already have commitments from in-state talents Collin Hartman (Indianapolis Cathedral) and Devin Davis Jr (Warren Central).
The state of Indiana is no-doubt loaded for the next couple of recruiting years, and it is promising to see the top talents choosing to remain in-state. While I am sure most of my readers would prefer to see kids don the cream and crimson, there is something to be said about the renewed rivalry in the not-to-distant future. Indiana and Purdue will face off with rosters full of Indiana kids who understand what the rivalry is all about.

After the jump, we will take a look at partial projected rosters when the Hoosiers and Boilermakers meet in 2013:

Hoosiers from Indiana:
Juniors: Cody Zeller, Austin Etherington
Sophomores: Yogi Ferrell, Hanner Perea* (AAU and now HS), Ron Patterson, Peter Jurkin* (AAU)
Freshman: Collin Hartman, Devin Davis Jr.
 * Perea and Jurkin are international players who spend the summers playing AAU for the Indiana Elite, and Perea transferred to La Porte LaLumiere in La Porte, IN prior to his junior season

Boilermakers from Indiana:
Seniors: Terone JohnsonTravis Carroll
Juniors: Donnie Hale
Sophomores: Rapheal Davis
Freshman: Basil Smotherman, Bryson Scott

It is important to note that because these are just projected lineups, they are absolutely unofficial and incomplete. Both Crean and Painter are still out on the recruiting trails trying to lure in top talent. The Hoosiers have already secured 2 2014 commitments in Trey Lyles and James Blackmon Jr, two players considered to not only be at the top of in-state list but probably the national lists. In fact, ESPN's preliminary ranking of the class of 2014 had Lyles as the top overall prospect. Crean is also working on recruiting Gary Harris, Jeremy Hollowell and Chesterton-native Mitch McGary. Painter is also recruiting Harris, as well as AJ Hammons, a Carmel-native playing at Oak Hill Academy.
